Australian umpire faces Sri Lankan ban
SYDNEY, Nov 18 (AFP) - Australian umpire Darrell Hair is unlikely to stand
18 NOVEMBER 1998
Australian Cricket Board officials said Wednesday a decision would be taken on Thursday after ACB chief executive Malcolm Speed met other directors.
Hair no-balled Muralidharan for throwing in the 1995-96 season and warned in
his autobiography published recently he was prepared to call the spinner again if his ``diabolical'' action had not improved.
Sri Lanka has defended the off-spinner, saying he was born with a permanently bent arm which he cannot straighten.
Hair's remarks prompted the Sri Lanka board to ask the International Cricket Council to suspend the umpire for bringing the game into disrepute.
Hair will officiate in the first Ashes Test between Australia and England starting in Brisbane on Friday.
