Barbados Cricket Association Sides With West Indies Players

The Barbados Cricket Association yesterday called for the
reinstatement of West Indies captain Brian Lara and vice-captain
Carl Hooper. It was one of five recommendations from the BCA,
which met urgently on Friday night to consider the impasse
existing between the WICB and WIPA. The BCA outlined in a
release signed by secretary Peter Symmonds said that it was
concerned ``that the tone and language of letters from the
secretariat to WIPA and its members (or players) could have been
construed as provocative if not hostile and needed to be far
more conciliatory''.
According to the Press release, The BCA board, after extensive
deliberations, considers that in this episode ``there can be no
winners and regrets the unfortunate turn of events''.
Courtney Walsh said yesterday he was heartened that the players
had the support of the BCA.
Walsh, BCA veteran of 102 Tests, serves as president of the
WIPA. He said it was reassuring to hear that the BCA was
supporting the players who are now locked in a major labour
dispute with the WICB.
``I think, it is a positive sign for us to hear that the Barbados
management has done that bearing in mind they have two
representatives on the board (WICB).
``It just leaves one to wonder, how many members of the board
were at that meeting,'' Walsh said.
