The S. Thomas' vs Nalanda inter-school cricket match ended in a tame draw at Mount Lavinia yesterday.
That this game would end in a stalemate was evident on the first day itself when the last session on Friday was washed away by rain.
Both teams influenced by the prevailing dull drab weather played unenterprisingly with little or no purpose.
S. Thomas' continuing from their score of 131 for 9 were all out without further addition when play resumed.
Medium pacie Kelum Gangodawila bowled well for Nalanda to have figures 4 for 35.
Nalanda in reply did not fare well either to be 108 for 8, but a breezy knock of 55 runs by skipper Niranjan Kumar enabled Nalanda to overtake S. Thomas' to be eventually dismissed for 165.
Lakmal Fernando and Suranga Peiris claimed three wickets each for S. Thomas'.

IT TURNED out to be the massacre of the innocents as Dharmaraja College, Kandy ran up a massive 305 for 2 wickets in only 35 overs to beat the visiting Karachi Grammar School from Pakistan by 150 runs in a limited-overs cricket match played at Lake View grounds, Kandy recently.
Rajans run riot was led by Pubudu Seneviratne who thumped a massive 176 in only 122 balls with the aid of 9 sixes and 23 fours. Pubudu Seneviratne put on 230 runs in an unbroken stand for the third wicket with C. Werake 62 not out.

S. THOMAS' COLLEGE, Gurutalawa beat the visiting Under 19 Grammer School team from Pakistan by 6 wickets in an exhibition limited over cricket encounter played at Gurutalawa grounds last Wednesday.
Visiting Grammer School took the first lease of the wicket and were all out for 171 runs in 35 overs. F. Ameen top scored with 43 runs while M. S. M. Faiz, M. R. M. Ajmeer and R. P. Fernando captured 3 wickets each.
The home team scored the required runs in 27.2 overs losing only 4 wickets. N. S. Weerasuriya was unbeaten with 43 runs while S. N. Karunaratne scored 42 runs.

SSC go down on 1st innings
FORMER CHAMPIONS SSC also opened the 1998 Saravanamuttu Trophy cricket tournament conceding first innings points to Tamil Union on the second day at Maitland Place yesterday. In reply to Tamil Union's 262, SSC managed to make 246 and Tamil Union in their second turn were 50 for 1 at close.
SSC were 40 for 3 overnight, and despite a century by Hemantha Wickremaratne (101 with 12 boundaries and a six), failed by 16 runs to get past the Tamil Union total.
Wickremaratne and Gayan Wijekoon (23) made 49 runs for the fourth wicket, while Wickremaratne and Nisal Fernando (18) put on 68 runs for the fifth wicket.

Bloomfield beaten by Colts on 1st innings

DEFENDING CHAMPION Bloomfield, started the 1998 Division I Saravanamuttu Trophy cricket tournament in a rather inauspicious way. They have already conceded first innings point to Colts at Reid Avenue yesterday. Colts made 203, but Bloomfield were able to make only 165 runs - 38 runs behind. Colts in their second turn were 48 for 2 at stumps.
The two Colts bowlers who clinched them a first innings issue were seamer Eric Upashantha (3 for 50) and left-arm spinner Dinuk Hettiaratchi (4 for 44).
The third and final days play is today.

NCC - Police evenly poised
THE NCC vs Police game in the Saravanamuttu Trophy cricket tournament was evenly poised at the end of the second day at Maitland Place yesterday. NCC were all out for 217 and Police were 124 for 3 when bad light stopped play for the day after four interruptions after lunch due to rain.
The highlight of the Police innings was the half century (51) by Chaminda Liyanage who put on 57 runs for the first wicket with H. A. Priyantha (33). He then put on 55 runs for the second wicket - first with Sujeeva Gunaratne who retired hurt after being hit on his chest by a delivery from Sanjeewa de Silva and then with N. M. Soysa (11).

Play resumes today
THE THREE-DAY cricket match between the visiting Zimbabwe cricket team and Sri Lanka Cricket Board President's XI will be resumed today at the Uyanwatte Stadium.
There was no play yesterday as a mark of respect to the Ven. Aggamaha Panditha Pottewela Pannasara Mahanayake Thera whose funeral took place at Hakmana Esplanade.
At close of play on Friday, Zimbabwe were 311 for 6 wickets with Andy Flower 101 not out. Earlier Grant Flower made 58 and Murray Goodwin 52.

Amunupura helps Kingswood to draw against St. Anthonys

A SPARKLING innings of 96 with 16 fours and 2 sixes compiled in 189 balls by 17-year-old Chanaka Amunupura helped Kingswood College to force an honourable draw in their Coca Cola Bottlers trophy cricket match against St. Anthonys College, Kandy at Katugastota yesterday.
Chanaka Amunupura batted with authority against the varied Antonian attack and mixed caution with aggression to thwart the opponents. Amunupura displayed a wide repertoire of strokes, and was out trying to force the pace to reach his maiden ton.
Rain before and during the match made play possible for only 180 minutes during which time the Kingswoodians went up to 195 for 6 to match up to the Antonians total of 274 for 5.

Trinity pull off 4-wkt win over St. Peter's

TRINITY COLLEGE pulled off a sensational four wicket win with a ball to spare in their inter-school cricket encounter against St. Peter's at Bambalapitiya yesterday.
Set to make 49 runs off five mandatory overs the Trinitians after few set backs reached the required runs in the penultimate delivery of the last over when Januka Attanayake hit Malinda Warnapura the Peterite captain for a boundary through mid wicket for a four.
The Trinitians required nine runs in the last over after Peterite spinner Chrishantha Pieris removed Suranga Morathota and Chaminda Aluthge in a single over after the Sri Lanka Under 19 poolist Suranga Morathota set the tempo for a Trinity victory with 26 including three boundaries and a six.
The Peterites declared their innings at their overnight score of 119 for 7 and Trinity in reply scored 150 in their first innings. Kaushalya Weeraratne (61) and Rodney Raffayal (24) were the main run getters.Left arm spinner Chrishantha Pieris was the chief wicket taker for the losers (5 for 50).
It was the Peterite batting in the second innings that really let them down. Medium pacer Suranga Morathota crashed through the Peterite batting in their second essay with 4 for 30 to reduce them to 79 all out.Besides Asitha de Silva ( 16) and Dilshan Rupasinghe (17) none made any worthwhile contributions.

St. Sebastian's take honours in drawn game

ST. SEBASTIAN'S College, Moratuwa took major honours in their drawn inter-school cricket encounter against St. Joseph's College at Darley Road yesterday.
Joes, set a victory target of 173 runs off 20 overs were precariously placed at 23 for 5 off 8.4 overs, with 11.2 overs to go when bad light slopped play.
The Josephians in reply to Sebastianites 214 on Friday were 52 for no loss. The overnight batsmen Johannes Jayasuriya unbeaten on 28 and Ian Daniel not out 21 were associated in a opening stand of 61 runs. Left-hander Johannes Jayasuriya who has scored over 400 runs upto date with 91 against Kingswood, 100 and 48 against Prince of Wales, scored another fluent 53 with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Ian Daniels added four more runs to be dismissed of 25 runs. After the exit of Johannes and Ian, wickets fell at regular intervals and the Josephians were struggling at 122 for 8. Tailenders Roshan de Silva (29) and Shenal Warnakula (14) made useful contributions which enabled Joes to declare at 160 for 9 off 51 overs. Right-arm off-spinner Dilshan Godfred bowled intelligently to claim 5 for 33 while left arm leggie Chaminda Francis had 2 for 33.
Sebastianites with a good 54 runs lead, batting a second time, made 118 for 5 declared off 43.4 overs at 4.05 pm. Dilshan Godfred proved his all-round ability top scoring with an unbeaten 48 with 5 fours and 1 six. Manjula Fernando hit a brisk 29.
In their second innings, St. Joseph's started off disastrously losing Johannes Jayasuriya (1) and Shevar Gunawardena (0) and Monto Perera (4) for just 12 runs. Play was halted for one over due to slight shower. On resumption, Joes lost two more quick wickets - Ian Daniels (13) and Sharanga Fernando (0) to be 5 for 23.
Medium paceman Ranga Balasuriya bowled a deadly spell to capture 4 for 10 off 3.4 overs while the other paceman Dinusha Fernando claimed 1 for 9. So Joes were lucky to escape defeat.
