Twose chosen over Harris

Wellington batsman Roger Twose's recent run of good form - much of it at one-day level - secured his selection ahead of Canterbury's Chris Harris in the New Zealand team for the third cricket test against India.

It is the only change from the 12 which won yesterday at Wellington by four wickets. Twose replaces the injured Nathan Astle for the test at Hamilton, which starts on Saturday. It is another recall for the former English professional who last played at test level a year ago in Australia.

On that occasion Twose was also called in to play the last test of a series against Australia which was his eighth appearance. His test average is 28.75 while Harris's is 15.60.

``We wanted an experienced and in-form player and Twose best fitted the bill from not a lot of candidates,'' said Ross Dykes, national selection panel convener yesterday.

``He's been scoring runs albeit mainly at one-day level.''

Twose also scored 99 opening the batting for Wellington against India this month but will bat in the middle order at either No. 4 or No. 5 for New Zealand filling Astle's position.

Twose was not in the New Zealand World Cup squad of 31 named this season to prepare for England and is not a contracted player.

``We said when that squad was named that the door was not shut on other players,'' Dykes said.

He confirmed that Harris was considered along with several other candidates.

Harris started the Shell Conference season spectacularly with an unbeaten 159 and averaged 64.25 compared to Twose who had the modest average of 22.85.

Dykes said Harris's form had tapered off since.

He indicated that with Astle's absence for the Black Caps one-day side, Matthew Horne was likely to fill his opening position. He said it was unlikely Matthew Bell, who made his test debut against India, would also be pitched into the international one-day arena.

Other players such as Twose, Craig Spearman, Mark Bailey, and Mathew Sinclair were under consideration.

Dykes said with Canterbury opener Llorne Howell, who played 12 one-dayers last season, the selectors had to be sure his injured shoulder, operated on during the off season, could withstand the rigours of international play before he was considered.
