Mohamed was unanimously elected a Honorary Life Member of this prestigious club by the MCC committee. He follows two other Sri Lankan cricketers Sidath Wettimuny and Duleep Mendis, who were conferred with the same honour in 1997 (for their outstanding achievements at Lord's in 1984) along with India's Jagmohan Dalmiya, the present chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Prior to his election to Honorary Life Membership, Mohamed was an associate member of the MCC since 1994.
Mohamed's involvement with Sri Lanka cricket dates back to the late seventies when he was first elected as assistant treasurer of the BCCSL under the presidentship of Dr. N.M. Perera. The following year he was elected treasurer under the presidency of T.B. Werapitiya and thereafter, he had a long association (seven years) as secretary with Gamini Dissanayake.
The two of them with other serving members of the BCCSL committee at the time, played a significant role in the infra-structure development required after Sri Lanka became a full member of the ICC.
Mohamed was elected secretary of the ACC in 1986 and 1987 when he played a major role in the formation of the council (then conference) along with Dissanayake, who was then ACC president. Sri Lanka hosted a major cricket tournament for the first time, the Asia Cup in 1986 and an invitation tournament with four nations participating which included New Zealand.
Mohamed was also elected vice president of the ACC in 1989 and was a member of the ICC appointed World Cup sub committee in 1987 when the tournament was hosted by India and Pakistan.
A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Mohamed migrated to the UK to take up a senior assignment with an international firm, but continued to take an abiding interest in Sri Lankan related cricket activities. He was a treasurer of the Sri Lanka Cricket Promoters Association (UK) and in 1994, was nominated by Dissanayake (when he was re-elected BCCSL president) to represent him at the ICC meeting at Lord's.
Prior to his involvement in Sri Lanka cricket administration, Mohamed was secretary of the Saracens Sports Club for a lenghty period.
The annual general meeting of Saracens SC will held today at 37, Alston Place, Colombo 2 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be followed by a dinner.
