Lancashire League: Lowerhouse on brink of disaster

Lowerhouse Cricket Club is on the brink of collapse.

That's the gloomy view of the Lancashire League club's chairman David Wren after a disastrous season.

His annual report said: ``1998 is the year in which the 136-year-old club could be described as terminally ill the year before an untimely death.

``It would be ironic that THE club with a 'proud' history of non-achievement, wonderful memories, unmatchable spirit and camaraderie could be the first in the league to have no future.

``The finances declare an insolvent position, no long term agreement in place for the tenure of the ground, no development feasibility, appalling facilities, inadequate committe structure, lack of quality and quantity of committee members.''

The appalling weather, a membership still disgruntled over the handling of former professional Corrie Jordaan, the unpopular league rules and finacial loss all add to the picture of dismay.

Turnover feel by nearly UKP 15,000 and there was a loss of nearly UKP 10,000, compared to a UKP 4,000 profit in 1997, leaving a debt approaching UKP 3,000.

Matt Hope as resigned as first team skipper but stays on as club captain.
