• Graeme Hick and Tom Moody set a new third wicket partnership record for all teams, 438 unbeaten at lunch on the second day of the match between Worcestershire and Hampshire at Southampton. Hick was 303 not out (his 96th first-class century and his second score of 300 or more) and Moody 180 not out. • The English counties' decision to reject Lord MacLaurin's two-division county championship proposal attracts criticism from the Chairman of the Professional Cricketers Association.
• A Western Australian Invitation XI defeats Transvaal in their three-day match at Lilac Hill, Perth. The match is not first-class as all twelve Western Australian players either batted or bowled in the match.

• Mashonaland gain the first-innings lead on Day Two against the touring New Zealanders.
• Warwickshire win the Sunday League in England.

• New Zealand win the second unofficial one-day international against Kenya at the Nairobi Club, Nairobi.

• Chris Cairns smashes 157 off 87 balls (with thirteen sixes) as New Zealand defeat Kenya in their first one-day match. This one-day series does not have official ODI status as no ICC match referee is present. Neither the New Zealand Cricket Council nor the Kenyan Cricket Association sought the attendance of an ICC referee at the series, the NZC had previously stated that they considered the Kenyan leg of the African tour to be "unofficial".
• Essex easily defeat Warwickshire in the NatWest Trophy final. Stuart Law was top scorer and Man of the Match. Essex won the match with 33.3 overs to spare, which is a record for Gillette/NatWest finals.
• Javagal Srinath completes a successful comeback to competitive cricket, playing for Indian Airlines against the KSCA President's XI in the Diamond Jubilee Cricket Tournament at Bangalore. He bowled sixteen overs and took two wickets in the three-day match, his first since breaking down last February.
• Kent lead the Sunday League after today's round.

• Kent lead the County Championship ladder with two weeks remaining. Among the highlights of this round, Graeme Thorpe scores a career-best 222 for Surrey against Glamorgan.
• Steve Tikolo scores 125 from 92 deliveries on Day Two of Kenya's match against the New Zealand XI.
• Although today's announcement that Athens has been awarded the 2004 Olympics has no bearing on cricket at this stage, last Wednesday's Electronic Telegraph carried a story on the current state of the game in Greece.

• Century to Craig Spearman (103) on the opening day of New Zealand's Kenyan leg of their African tour. New Zealand 280 for 6 declared, Kenya 25 for 1 at stumps on the first day of three.
• In County Championship action, Craig White scores 171 not out in 167 balls (20 fours 7 sixes) for Yorkshire against Worcestershire, including 25 in one over from Richard Illingworth.

• The New Zealand team arrive in Kenya for the start of their African tour.

• The Australian Cricket Board announce some radical rule changes for the Mercantile Mutual Cup domestic one-day competition in the forthcoming 1997-98 season. Each team can now choose 12 players for each match. They can name an extra batsman in their order and then substitute him for a specialist bowler when it is their turn to field. The other change is to restrict fielding sides to three fielders outside the circle for overs 16-30.
• The NatWest Trophy final between Essex and Warwickshire scheduled for Saturday the 6th at Lord's is deferred to the following day so as not to clash with the Royal funeral for Diana, Princess of Wales.
• Ben Hollioake wins the English Cricket Writers' Club Young Cricketer of the Year award for the 1997 English season.
