Lancashire: Haynes awarded cap

LANCASHIRE have awarded Jamie Haynes his second team cap. The 23-year-old wicket keeper, born in Bristol but signed from Canberra, has enjoyed a consistent season in his second year at Old Trafford although Warren Hegg has limited him to one championship appearance for the first team.

Haynes is one of a number of fringe players, also including Darren Shadford, Nathan Wood, Richard Green and Gary Keedy, who are set to be offered new contracts in the next couple of days.

Haynes was presented with his cap before today's rearranged Sunday League game against Essex at Old Trafford, with Lancashire looking to maintain their bid for second or third place. Mike Watkinson returned as skipper after leaving himself out of the Championship game against Essex last week to give Keedy a chance, while Glen Chapple came in to boost the bowling and Mike Atherton dashed up from last night's England selection meeting in London to play.

The Lancashire Committee were also holding discussions on their response to the latest proposals to reform the English game from Lord MacLaurin.

After his initial reforms were opposed by members at all counties, MacLaurin has put forward two more alternatives to the status quo.

The first is to maintain the 18 team championship with the top eight to qualify for a one-day ``Super Cup'' the following season, but more likely to be introduced is two divisions of nine counties, based on next season's championship positions.

That would give Lancashire a chance of making the First Division, whereas if the Championship was split on previous performances, they would be certain to start in Division Two.

Lancashire's team today: Atherton, Watkinson, Crawley, Lloyd, Fairbrother, Austin, Hegg, Yates, Chapple, Green, Martin.
