The southern province inter-school limited over cricket tournament was held recently at Uyanwatte stadium, Matara, with the participation of a large gathering over 10,000 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of St. Servatius' College, Matara.
12 schools from the Southern Province participated in this tournament. The final match was between St. Servatius' and St. Thomas' which commenced late due to heavy rains and was limited to 38 overs. St. Thomas College won the match by 6 runs. H. K. Pulasthi Rangana, captain of St. Thomas was adjudged the man of the match and the tournament.
Minister of Sports, Samurdhi and Youth Affairs S. B. Dissanayake and MP for Matara district, Dallas Alahapperuma gave away the awards.
Rs. 10,000 was presented to the champion team by Mr. S. B. Dissanayake and Rs. 7,500 for the runners-up, St. Servatius' College, was awarded by Mr. Alahapperuma, distinguished old boy of St. Servatius.
The man of the match and tournament was announced by Mr. Lionel Wagasinghe, college coach of Sanath Jayasuriya.
Two bats worth Rs. 7,500 each presented by M/s Hartly and Company was presented to Sanath Jayasuriya and Ruchira Palliyaguru, which were given away to Pulsathi Rangana the Man of the match and tournament, for his performance.
The tournament was organised by the Old Boy's Association of St. Servatius' College and was sponsored by the Union Bank, where Sanath Jayasuriya is presently employed.
Vidyartha hold Kingswood to a tame draw
Vidyartha College, Kandy, held Kingswood College to a tame draw in their Coca Cola Bottlers trophy cricket tournament match concluded at Police grounds, Kandy on Wednesday.
Vidyartha College 160 all out in 56.5 overs (D.K. Ranaweera 36, K. G. Ranjith 22, D. Wanasinghe 17, H. Thamila 16, R. Jayakoddy 15, S. K. Hewawitharne 14, T. Madanayake 5 for 53, V. Y.
