Zahira College, Colombo lost one of its former outstanding cricketers with the demise of Muhammed Anver in Oman.

Anver distinguished himself as a wicket-keeper and opening batsman and is best remembered for being involved in a massive second wicket partnership of 526 runs with M.S. Chuncheer in their inter-school match against Dharmaraja, Kandy in 1957.

Anver's contribution in that record breaking effort was 146. The following year, Anver was vice captain to Muttiah Devaraj.

Anver led the Combined Schools XI in 1957 and toured India with the Zahira College team in 1955 under the captaincy of Tauff Hakeem.

He joined Moors SC and continued his cricket with them playing in the Sara trophy tournament.

As cricket chairman and vice president of the Old Zahirians SC Anver saw that Zahira reconstructed its grounds and turf pitches at a cost of Rs. 2.5 million.

Anver also played cricket for Freudenberg in the Mercantile tournament. He was the shipping manager of the company. For three decades till the time of his demise, Anver was the general manager of Al-Fayha Shipping Agencies of Oman.

His Janaza was flown to Sri Lanka and leaves his residence at Isipatana Mawatha, Colombo 5 today to Maligawatta Muslim Burial grounds.

Anver is survived by his wife Nihura, son Shiyam and daughter Nuzrath.
