The presentation was made by the Managing Director Rohan Rajapakse, at the Umpires Seminar held at Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo.
Mr. Mahinda Seneviratne, President of the Umpires Association (Sri Lanka) thanked Mr. Rajapakse for the donation, which he said would take away eye strain when doing night umpiring in cricket matches.
Mr. Rajapakse said he valued very much the opportunity provided to him to make the donation in the interest of cricket in Sri Lanka. He said that the game has much caught up with all sections of the community superseding ethnic barriers. Harmony and Peace can be achieved through sports, he said.
Explaining the new type of spectacles, he said that sodium vapour had been used in colouring them to bring a sharper contrast between bright light and night, thus giving a greater clarity of vision. These glasses were also helpful in night driving, and very popular in the West.
He also said that these glasses were first designed for night shooting and also for filters in cameras. Now it has been developed for eye wear in the night.
Mr. Rajapakse presented the first pair to the most senior International Umpire in Sri Lanka, K. T. Francis.
Miss Usra Reyhal, Marketing Manager of the firm, also spoke. The other umpires who were presented with the new glasses were W. A. U. Wickremasinghe, Peter Manuel, T. N. Samarasinghe, I. Anandappa and B. C. Cooray.
