SSC plan 4-nation one-day tourney

The Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) are planning to celebrate their Centenary Year in 1999 with a four-nation one-day international cricket tournament planned for February.

A cricket committee headed by R.J. de Silva has already been formed to work out the details for holding such a tournament.

According to De Silva, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has accepted in principle, the proposal of the SSC to host the tournament as part of their Centenary Celebrations.

FORE-RUNNER

India, Pakistan along with one other country will join host Sri Lanka in the competition, which is expected to be a fore-runner to the June 1999 World Cup tournament in England.

The SSC are renowned for producing some of the finest cricketers to don the Sri Lanka cap in its one hundred years of existence, including the current World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

Competitions in tennis and swimming which SSC is also notable for along with other sports, will form part of the Centenary celebrations. But cricket will take pride of place with the staging of the international competition.

All matches including the final are scheduled to be played at the SSC.
