* Australia emerged Women's World Cup cricket champions when they beat New Zealand by five wickets in the final played at the Eden gardens in Calcutta. It was the fourth time that the Aussie women won the world title.
Electing to bat first, New Zealand were shot out for 164 in 49.3 overs. But it was a simple target for the Australian women who reach the mark in style - scoring 165 for five with 14 balls to spare. Australia's previous women's World cup success were in 1978, 1982 and 1988.
* South Africa 'A' registered an exciting 19- run win over the West Indies 'A' on the final day of their four-day unofficial Test against South Africa 'A' at Newlands in Cape Town. Chasing a victory target of 267 to win, the visitors were shot out for 247 after resuming the final day at 158 for 5.
Electing to bat first, South Africa 'A' were shot out for 129. N.A.M.McLean had 3 for 27. But the West Indies 'A' too made only 164 all out in their first innings to gain a close lead. But South Africa staged a good comeback by scoring 301 ll out in their second innings, thanks to half centuries by G.F.J. Liebenberg (53), H.D. Ackerman (69) and D.M.Benkenstein (66). The visitors were struggling at 85 for 5 at one stage but a 116-run sixth wicket stand between L.R.Williams (84) and R.L. Hoyte (38) helped them to give a good run to the South Africans. Hayward (3 for 82) and Botha (3 for 37) shared the wickets for the winners.
