Marians win by eight wickets

A fine double by all-rounder Piyananda Ariyadasa helped St. Mary's College, Kegalle to score an eight wicket win over Kegalu Maha Vidyalaya in their 21st 'Battle of the Golds' played at the Kegalle Esplanade recently.

Piyananda Ariyadasa who opened the Marians bowling captured 4 for 30 and 4 for 40 to give him a match bag of 8 for 70. When the Marians batted he was in punishing form cracking a quick 91 with 12 fours and followed up with another knock of 38 in no time to post the Marians victory. This was St. Mary's third win of the series against none by Kegalu Vidyalaya. This was also the first time a result has been produced in this big match since 1968.

St. Mary's skipper Manjula Gunaratne who won the toss invited their opponents to bat and they were dismissed for 163 with Ariyadasa doing the damage. St. Mary's in their turn at the wickets hit up a formidable 244 for 5 before declaring. Piyananda Ariyadasa top-scored with a quick 91 with good contributions coming from S. Ekanayake (40) and skipper Manjula Gunaratne (43).

Kegalu Vidyalaya in their second essay fared slightly better to score 183 all out with P. Dharmasena top-scoring with 55. Set to make 105 for victory, the Marians hit them off for the loss of two wickets.

Kegalu Vidyalaya 163 all out (A. Jayaratne 48, Indika 54, P. Ariyadasa 4 for 30, R. L. Herath 2 for 25, S. Ekanayake 2 for 35, J. Kaluarachchi 2 for 40) AND 183 all out (L. Liyanahetti 43, P. Dharmasena 55, P. Ariyadasa 4 for 40, R. L. Herath 4 for 45).

St. Mary's College 244 for 5 wkts decl. (Piyananda Ariyadasa 91, S. Ekanayake 40, M. Gunaratne 40, J. Kaluarachci 35, C. Pathmaperuma 2 for 55) and 105 for 2 wickets (S. Ekanayake 54, P. Ariyadasa 38).
