Somerset terminate Weston festival

8 November 1996

SOMERSET have taken Weston-super-Mare off their first-class list, citing financial reasons, and next summer's scheduled game against Kent will be moved to headquarters at Taunton.

The likelihood of a clean break had existed for several years, but many followers will be sad that an 82-year-old tradition at Clarence Park has been ended.

The walled public park ground, with its holm oaks and pine, was a distinctive feature on the circuit, even if the facilities for players and umpires were well below ideal.

Somerset said the festival would not be viable, despite receiving what they described as a ``very generous offer'' of subsidy from the North Somerset District Council.

Durham have signed batsman Nick Speak, released by Lancashire, on a three-year contract. Another possible target Martin Speight as wicketkeeper-batsman - is considering an improved offer from Sussex.

Ed Giddins, the England A fast bowler, goes to a hearing at Lord's today to appeal against the 19-month ban imposed by the Test and County Cricket Board after he failed a drugs test during a match last May. Sussex subsequently sacked him.

Gloucestershire have appointed Colin Sextone as their new chief executive, with responsibility for commercial aspects of the club. Philip August, who held the post last season, becomes cricket secretary.
