Moore Attempts To Convince Salisbury To Stay

1 November 1996

Peter Moores's first job as the new Sussex captain will be to try to persuade England leg-spinner Ian Salisbury to stay at Hove.

Moores, 33, who yesterday replaced the sacked Alan Wells, says he will be speaking to Salisbury, who is believed to be a target of Surrey, as well as batsman Martin Speight and all-rounder Danny Law, whose futures with Sussex have also been the subject of speculation.

``We want all the players to stay and I will do my best to try to keep them, but it's their decision and they have to stay because they want to,'' said Moores.

Several Sussex players were said to be unhappy with Wells' style of leadership and Moores admitted the club has become ``frustrated'' by a lack of success.

Nigel Bett, the Sussex secretary, confirmed that an approach had been made to Derbyshire batsman Chris Adams but that he was no longer on their wanted list.

Derbyshire, meanwhile, have stressed that Adams has two years of a contract to run and is not available.
