Danny Law Leaves Sussex

20 November 1996

Danny Law joined the exodus from Sussex yesterday when the all-rounder signed a three-year contract with Essex.

Law, 21, follows Ian Salisbury and Ed Giddins on the way out from Hove and there could be others. Alan Wells, the former captain, has asked to speak to other counties while batsman Martin Speight is considering a move to Durham.

Chris Waller, Sussex's second XI coach, flew to Melbourne in a vain attempt to persuade Law, who has been with the county since he was 13, to stay. ``In view of all that we have done for him we are extremely disappointed that he is leaving,'' said Nigel Bett, the Sussex secretary.

Law enjoyed his best summer last season, scoring 609 runs in the championship and taking 44 wickets.
