Lamb, 42, retired from first-class cricket before the start of last season following a dispute over the publication of his autobiography. If he is appointed, he will take over from Dav Whatmore, who has joined Lancashire.

Brian Lara is to be disciplined by the West Indies management for his outburst against Australian wicket-keeper Ian Healy during the defeat at the second Test in Sydney.

Lara stormed into the Australian dressing-room during the Test after being controversially caught by Healy to say that the wicketkeeper was not welcome in the visiting dressing-room.

South African fast bowler Allan Donald has dismissed fears that a heel injury could jeopardise his return to Warwickshire next summer following his exit from the series in India.

The demand to keep Test cricket at Headingley has been supported by the man who once brought it to a halt. In 1975 supporters of the George Davis is Innocent Campaign spread oil and tar on the wicket and forced the Test between England and Australia to be abandoned.

Davis, who was jailed for 20 years for a series of armed robberies, was released in 1976. He said: ``The damage done by my supporters to the wicket was probably the one action which swung my release. It certainly gave me a high profile, and I would hate to see cricket moved from Headingley.''
