With skipper Sourav Ganguly finding his touch at the other end, the duo had put on 192 runs for the opening wicket by then. It was a record first wicket partnership for India against England, overhauling the 188 runs that Krish Srikkanth and Ravi Shastri put on in 1984-85. More importantly, it had paved the way for India's entry into the semi-finals; the men from the sub-continent only required 78 runs for victory from the over 21 overs that remained to be bowled at that stage.
