INDIA FINISH STRONGLY ON THE THIRD DAY AT 319/6
India were 319/6 at the close of play on the third day at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. Skipper Sourav Ganguly was going strong on an unbeaten 135 off 279 balls, punctuating his knock with 21 fours and a six. Giving the skipper company was Anil Kumble on 19 off 63 balls. The final session produced 76 runs and India lost the wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar.

In the very first over after the tea break, Sehwag punished Friend for a couple of boundaries to set the tempo. Sourav Ganguly had spent enough time in the middle and he decided to cut loose; three powerful cut shots off Ray Price just raced to the backward point fence.

If Sehwag has a weakness, it is the ball that leaves him outside the off. When Heath Streak got it right once, Sehwag flashed at it, but the resultant edge was put down by Andy Flower at first slip. The very next ball was cleverly bowled - getting it to move back in off the seam and hitting Sehwag on the pads, well in line with the stumps. Umpire Jayaprakash did not hesitate to put the finger up. Sehwag made 74 brilliant runs off 118 balls, striking 16 boundaries and emphasising his value to the middle order.

Sanjay Bangar came in and played a delicate shot to third-man for four. That was all he could make as he became the second batsman to be dismissed by Ganguly's reluctant running. Carlisle's throw from covers to Taibu was a bit too quick for Bangar, who was trying to get back to his crease. India were 280/6 at that stage.

Heath Streak (2/82) bowled well today without much luck. The final phase of today's play saw some dour defensive batting by Kumble. No running between wickets was to be seen as Kumble took much of the strike, leaving the in-form Ganguly a spectator at the non-striking end for the best part. India still trail by 10 runs and will be looking forward to building up a lead tomorrow.

GANGULY REACHES HIS MUCH-AWAITED TEST HUNDRED
In the 25 minutes of play possible in the second session of the third day, India scored 29 runs to take the score to 243/4. Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly were at the crease on 66* and 100* respectively.

Sehwag enjoyed feasting on what Ray Price had to offer; in the very first over after resumption of play, Sehwag whipped one to the mid-wicket fence to get to his fifty. The dashing Delhi batsman followed that one with a rousing cover drive for four through the covers.

Ganguly too got in to the act by dispatching a short and wide delivery from Streak to the backward point fence. Sehwag was going great guns, making batting look so easy, smacking cover drives for four off Price and Streak.

Sehwag seemed to have no mental blocks when it came to playing left-arm spin. It was quite interesting to note that Sachin Tendulkar, upon whom Sehwag models himself, struggled to score off Price yesterday. Sehwag has taken nine of his 14 boundaries off Price thus far.

Ganguly reached his hundred off the very last ball before the tea interval, pulling one from Streak to the fine-leg fence. The final session will be of two and a half hours, light permitting, to make up for the lost time.

RAIN PLAYS SPOILSPORT IN DELHI
India were 214/4 when lunch was taken early on the third day of the second Test played against Zimbabwe at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. Virender Sehwag was in irrepressible form at his homeground and struck half a dozen boundaries in the 69 minutes of play possible this morning. He is unbeaten on 47 off 87 balls with 10 fours. Sourav Ganguly is inching towards his first Test hundred in 28 months, currently on 90* off 208 balls.

It was a combination of bad light and rain that played spoilsport in the first session on the third day. Exactly after an hour, the players came off because of bad light, and then an unseasonal shower kept them away for a longer time. After the break, only nine more minutes of play were squeezed in before bad light intervened once again.

In the 17 overs bowled this morning, India added 43 runs, with Sehwag doing bulk of the scoring in boundaries. Sehwag danced down the track and lofted Ray Price to the long off fence for a four and later cracked a cover drive, the sixth four off the bowler.

Heath Streak too suffered at the hands of Sehwag - a powerful cover drive, a firm whip through mid-wicket, and a slashing drive through backward point. In contrast, Ganguly was circumspect and keen on collecting his runs in singles. The Indian skipper did play a short-arm jab to the mid-wicket fence off Watambwa.

In the brief period after the first rain interruption, Sehwag cracked Friend for a four through the off side to move to 47.
