Who was the first Indian to claim a 10-wicket haul in Tests against South Africa? (09 November 2001)

Allan Donald was quick to claim the honour of being the first bowler to take 10 wickets in an India-South Africa Test match. The man known as White Lightning claimed 12-139 in the third Test between the two sides in December 1992 at Port Elizabeth.

It was almost exactly four years later that an Indian picked up 10 wickets in a Test involving the two sides. It was the first Test of the Indian tour of South Africa in 1996-1997. Venkatesh Prasad, who opened the Indian bowling with Javagal Srinath after Mohammad Azharuddin had won the toss and put South Africa in, claimed five for 60 as the home team were dismissed for 235 in their first innings. Prasad was again the pick of the Indian bowlers in the South African second innings, taking 5-93 to end up with match-figures of 10 for 153.

His performance, though, could not save India from an embarrassing 328-run defeat. Donald, who returned figures of nine for 54, breathed fire, as India were dismissed for 100 and 66 in their two innings. Prasad, incidentally, remains the only Indian bowler to claim 10 wickets in an India-South Africa Test.
