Sachin Tendulkar's lowest one-day average, by country, is against England?
(10 January 2002)
Arguably the best one-day batsman the world has ever seen, Sachin Tendulkar averages a formidable 43.73 in the shorter version of the game, and his onslaughts against various bowlers will live long in the
memory of the cricket fan. One country, however, that has not yet
weathered the brunt of his devastating best is England, a side that,
ironically enough, has fielded some of the weaker bowling attacks in
recent memory.
In 14 innings against England, Tendulkar has made 384 runs with a best
of 91. His average stands at 29.53 - far, far less than his overall
average, and just slightly lower than his next lowest of 33, against
South Africa. None of his 31 one-day hundreds, and only two of his 53
fifties, have come against England; they are thus the only side against
whom, in 10 or more innings, Tendulkar has not scored a century.
His averages against the other countries, even if the disproportionately
high 140 against Kenya is taken with a pinch of salt, show amply
Tendulkar's prowess in the one-day game. The Indian maestro will now be
looking to the upcoming six-match series at home to set the record just
that much straighter. If he succeeds, the England bowlers can then join
the international club of players, including such stalwart names as
Shane Warne, who have recurring nightmares about Tendulkar dancing down
the track to smash them for six.
