The Electronic Telegraph Somerset v Sussex, National League 2nd Division, Round 18
DJ Rutnagur - 22 August 1999

Kerr is left in the dark

Sussex (260-3) bt Somerset (258-6) by 2 runs

Arousing 115 off 103 balls by Chris Adams and the awesome assault he and Tony Cottey waged in the last seven overs, from which 82 runs were added, set Somerset an oppressive target which was within their scope until the last ball. Jason Kerr, though, misjudged in dim light and shouldered arms to Kirtley.

Despite a fine opening spell by Graham Rose, Sussex, who were put in, were given a brisk start by Richard Montgomerie and Michael Di Venuto. Montgomerie did not survive his partner for long and Adams concentrated on stabilising the innings, which needed further repair when Jamie Carpenter fell at 101 in the 23rd over.

Tony Cottey, his new partner, got busy with placements square of the wicket, but Adams played without courting danger until the 39th over, from which 20 runs were pillaged, with Adams hitting three fours and a six. He went from his fifty to his hundred off just 22 balls, having hit 11 fours and three sixes.

Somerset, beaten only once in 16 one-day matches hitherto, were not fazed by their target or the loss of their first two wickets for 51. Peter Bowler played sturdily for 53. Michael Burns and Marcus Trescothick hit lustily for 47 apiece and then Keith Parsons and Rob Turner kept up the challenge.
