The Electronic Telegraph Glamorgan v Durham, National League 2nd Division
Christopher Lyles at Cardiff - 10 August 1999

Durham rely on Daley and Speak

Durham (198-7) bt Glamorgan (189-7) by 9 runs

Glamorgan's promotion aspirations were dealt a severe blow yesterday when they were narrowly beaten by bottom-placed Durham, who had hitherto won only one national League match this season. Realistically, Glamorgan now need to beat fellow promotion hopefuls Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire in their next two games if they are to retain any hope of First Division cricket next season.

On a sluggish pitch, Durham's total owed much to a third-wicket partnership of 90 in 21 overs between Jimmy Daley and Nick Speak. The pair came together in the 10th over after the metronomic Steve Watkin had David Boon and Paul Collingwood leg before with deliveries that kept low.

Glamorgan made the worst possible start when Steve James was trapped on his crease by the third ball of the innings, and when Jacques Kallis played on to the estimable John Wood, the home side were in some trouble at 37 for three in the 13th over.

A fourth-wicket partnership of 81 between Matthew Maynard and Adrian Dale threatened to restore Glamorgan's fortunes, but after Maynard had perished to a spectacular overhead catch by Ian Hunter, the task of scoring 81 in little more than 12 overs proved to be too elusive.
