Gallian sails on to century

Fixture erosion at club grounds is all the more disappointing because excellent pitches are lost to the county game. Cleethorpes would be much missed if Nottinghamshire should discard their trek to Lincolnshire.

An excellent batting surface produced a match of 446 runs, if not a stimulating finish, and a result of coast-to-coast impact. Sussex suffered a first League defeat of the season in their promotion rivalry with Somerset and, locally, a second successive win gave Nottinghamshire a much needed lift.

Jason Gallian cast aside recent set-backs with 108 not out, his first league century for Nottinghamshire to go with two for Lancashire. His innings was measured in tone and pace, a steady accumulation from almost half of the strike.

Gallian was only in front of his side's scoring rate in a stand of 103 with Guy Welton, and thereafter sparks came from Graeme Archer's 52 in 42 balls. Sussex relied on their younger bowlers for containment and, unusually, they did not bat well under pressure.

Their heavyweights went to short deliveries from Chris Tolley, Michael Di Venuto finding square leg and Chris Adams cutting to backward point. Only James Carpenter's defiant half century in 65 balls seriously resisted a new zest in Nottinghamshire's cricket.
