Holloway in brilliant form

Somerset (225-9) beat Surrey (227-8) by 2 wickets

A Brilliant unbeaten century from Piran Holloway steered Somerset to an improbable two-wicket win over Surrey at Guildford and made it seven wins out of seven for the visitors.

Victory had looked highly unlikely when, with 21 overs remaining, Somerset needed 143 to win with six wickets still standing. But Somerset's target of 226 was always attainable on a compact Guildford ground, with a lightning-fast outfield.

Holloway was in superb form. He gave only one half-chance when, on 80, bowler Mark Butcher failed to hold on to a blistering drive that came back at him like a missile.

The Somerset reply got off to a poor start when, in the second over, captain Jamie Cox went for a duck, Saqlain Mushtaq taking a well-judged head-high catch on the third-man boundary.

They were in deep trouble at 75 for four, but Holloway carried on regardless, his half century coming in 75 balls with five fours.

Keith Parsons added solid support with a gritty 25 before he departed with an uynlikely stumping having stumbled out of his crease.

Steffan Jones helped get the target down to 25 off 18 balls before Andy Caddick finished the match spectacularly, swiping England leg spinner Ian Salisbury for two consecutive sixes over square leg.
