Archer atones for run outs

Notts (240-7) bt Glamorgan (214) by 26 runs

Graeme Archer went from villain to hero inside 90 minutes when he atoned for two silly run outs yesterday by solidly anchoring Nottinghamshire to a winning total against Glamorgan, despite a dashing 65 from Matthew Maynard.

For Archer, his undefeated 75 continues a period of reasonable form which is needed to impress Clive Rice, a coach thoroughly unimpressed by his batsmen.

What Rice thought of how Archer contrived to run out captain Jason Gallian and Guy Welton is likely to be unprintable. However, he made up for the lack of communication by re-building an innings which had descended to 91 for five. Working relationships were established with Vasbert Drakes and Paul Franks putting on 41 and 76 respectively.

Franks supplied the acceleration, belatedly milking the short boundary on the Bridgford Road side, in his 40 from 42 balls which followed the presentation of a county cap to him and Chris Read.

Glamorgan looked set for a good chase when Maynard and Adrian Dale put on 110. But the challenge fell apart once Maynard was bowled by Richard Stemp. Paul Franks cleared up; taking three wickets in an over, including two in successive deliveries.
