The Electronic Telegraph Durham v Northamptonshire, National League 2nd Division
Tim Wellock - 19 June 1999

Hayden in control

Northants (201-5) bt Durham (137) by 77 runs (D/L method)

Matthew Hayden came in well clear in the clash of Australian captains as his 86 off 85 balls effectively sealed Northamptonshire's 77-run win against Durham.

When Durham won at Northampton the previous week they had Hayden caught at short extra cover when David Boon was absent with a bruised hand.

On Saturday Boon was at short extra and put down a sharp chance offered on 22 by Hayden, who had previously totalled only 76 in five National League innings.

There were no further hiccups in a commanding performance which carried his side to 68 without loss when rain arrived in the 11th over and 201 for five when the innings closed after 33 overs.

Durham's revised target under the Duckworth/Lewis method was 215 and once John Morris had been well taken at backward point for 41 it was a lost cause.

Jon Lewis contributed 30 off 27 balls before being stumped off a leg-side wide, helping Graeme Swann to flattering figures of five for 35, his first strike ending a second-wicket stand of 53.
