Nottinghamshire overcame sturdy Surrey resistance to record their first victory in a thrilling finish.

Wicketkeeper Chris Read top-scored with 44 from as many balls, sharing a crucial fifth-wicket stand of 82 in 15 overs with Noel Gie. He then held three catches, his victims including Ben Hollioake, whose departure prompted a collapse which saw five wickets tumble for 12 runs in six overs before Ian Ward, with a superb 80 from 81 balls, threatened to turn the game on its head.

Ward shared fifty partnerships with Gary Butcher and Alex Tudor before Read kept his cool to run out the menacing Tudor and Paul Franks bowled Ward to end Surrey's challenge.
