CAPE TOWN, Jan 5 (AFP) - Allrounder Jacques Kallis put South Africa in sight of a fourth consecutive victory over the West Indies when he followed an innings of 88 not out with three wickets on the fourth day of the fourth Test at Newlands Tuesday.

West Indies, set a near-impossible victory target of 421, crashed to 93-6 at close of play. The seal was put on yet another dismal day for the tourists when skipper Brian Lara, who twice needed treatment on the field for an injured left knee, was caught and bowled by left-arm wrist spinner Paul Adams in the last over of the day.

Lara, who had earlier hit 14 in an over off Adams in an otherwise subdued and watchful innings of 33, failed to get to the pitch of the ball as he jumped out to drive and spooned a simple catch off the bottom of his bat.

The only comfort for the tourists was a weather forecast of afternoon rain showers on the last day, Wednesday.

Kallis, who made 110 in the first innings, was denied his second century of the match when Hansie Cronje declared South Africa's second innings on 226-7 an hour after lunch. Shaun Pollock and Kallis, who shared the new ball because of a hamstring injury to Allan Donald, ripped out the first five batsmen. Kallis took 3-27 and Pollock 2-21. Pollock, playing in his 29th Test, moved into fourth place on the South African all-time Test bowling list with 117 wickets, one more than his father Peter, who played in 28 matches.

Pollock had Philo Wallace caught at mid-on for nought, after two balls earlier having a confident appeal for a catch behind the wicket turned down by umpire Srinivas Venkataraghavan.

Junior Murray swung across the line and was leg before to Kallis for seven before Shivnarine Chanderpaul, on five, edged Kallis low to first slip where Daryll Cullinan held a fine catch, diving to his left.

Lara and Carl Hooper resisted for 84 minutes in a stand of 32 before Kallis struck again in his second spell. Hooper, who made top score of 86 for his side in the first innings, edged a drive into his stumps after making 20.

Darren Ganga helped Lara put on 40 for the fifth wicket before he was trapped lbw by a Pollock inswinger and Lara followed two balls later to consign West Indies to almost certain defeat unless rain intervenes.

Earlier Kallis had played a largely untroubled innings, batting for 291 minutes and facing 257 balls. Although it was obvious South Africa would declare during the afternoon, he added only 13 runs after lunch.

He was dropped on 87 when bowler Ottis Gibson could not hold on to a firm drive. West Indies were without fast bowler Curtly Ambrose, who has an injured hamstring, in the South African second innings.
