The youngest, fittest and most professional team in the Inchcape South American Championship, Argentina, easily won the tournament, which was held in Lima, Peru, from 1st to 4th April 1999. In the first round Argentina comfortably defeated Brazil and Chile, while the other group was much more even, with Guyana, Peru and Venezuela each winning one match. Guyana won the group on run rate, with Peru finishing second. In the final the Guyana Masters XI (average age 49) put up a spirited fight, but their score of 134 was never going to be enough against a side whose average age was less than half of theirs, and Argentina won by 8 wickets, with good contributions from Gibson and Forrester. In the third and fourth place match Chile pipped Peru by 5 runs, with the last five Peru wickets falling for just 5 runs. The best batting of the tournament was Fazal Matura^Ōs 112 not out for Venezuela to defeat a rather weary Guyana bowling side, who hit a very good 191, with Seeram outstanding.
