A fine knock of 53 runs of Ashley de Silva coming from 58 balls and three for 29 bowling spell by Madhurasinghe helped Sri Lanka beat India by three wickets in the opening match of the three nation world masters cricket series being organised under the auspicies of Punjab Cricket Association to celebrate 300 years of ``Birth of Khalsa'', here this evening.
Sri Lanka won the toss, but opted to field. India, 93 for three at one stage, scored 196 for 8 in their stipulated 35 overs following the collapse by four middle order batsmen who were back in the pavilion for the addition of 44 runs. Sri Lanka scored 197 for seven with 2.2 overs to spare.
Skipper Sandeep Patil (22), Ashok Malhotra (27), Sanjeev Sharma (4) and Kiran More (2) failed to capitalise on the strong foundation laid by openers Salil Ankola (41) and Roger Binny (27) who fell at the total of 71 and 78 respectively.
Indian bowlers bowled 24 wides to give a total of 38 extras to the visitors for whom besides Ashley de Silva, B.Kuruppu (25) and Skipper Duleep Mendis (20) were the only two batsmen to cross the 20 runs mark. Salil Ankola and Suru Nayak were the main wicket takers who took 2 wickets each giving away 22 and 21 runs respectively.
India play their next match against West Indies at Jalandhar on February 9. The match between the two visiting sides and the final would be played in Delhi on February 11 and 13 respectively.
