Date-stamped : 07 Jun97 - 06:16 University Match: Powell in run spree on debut By Mike Berry in The Parks First day of three: Oxford Univ (74-1) trail Glamorgan (422-2) by 348 runs MICHAEL POWELL, a 20-year-old Glamorgan debutant from Aber- gavenny, yesterday wrote himself into the pages of Wisden as only the third batsman this century to score a double-hundred on their bap- tism in English cricket. Powell drove powerfully and was unforgiving on anything re- motely wayward. His 200 not out off 213 balls contained 31 fours and one six. Gary Butcher also indulged in a savage post-tea assault. He smashed his way from 45 to 100 in 23 balls -his century arrived off 64 -as he shared in a partnership of 171 in 18 overs. Oxford performed miserably with the ball. They lacked direc- tion and length on a pitch begging for such virtues, and became unusu- ally ragged in the field. But they ended the day on a partial high as Mark Wagh stroked 13 fluent fours in an unbeaten 56 off only 63 balls. Wagh, who is contracted to Warwickshire, scored forcefully through the off-side and completed a maiden first-class hun- dred off 163 balls in the first over after lunch. The excellent pitch also promised a collective landmark. While Wagh and Peter Morgan, a stylish South African-born Old Etoni- an, were going well, a total in excess of 300 loomed for the first time this season. But Morgan, who twice pulled Darren Thomas for six, punched uppishly to mid-off, Wagh spooned up a leading edge, and the batting ghosts returned. Four wickets fell for five runs in 22 balls, but the Oxford tail nudged them to their biggest first-class total this year.
