Date-stamped : 09 Jun97 - 06:16 Young hammers Yorkshire By Stephen Thorpe at Headingley Gloucs (252-3) bt Yorkshire by 44 runs (206-8) A RECORD-breaking assault from Tasmanian all-rounder Shaun Young set the seal on Gloucestershire`s week in the broad acres and de- nied Yorkshire the chance of joint residency at the top of the Sun- day League. Young made 146 not out off 105 balls, eclipsing Gloucester`s previous Sunday best of 134 not out by Mark Alleyne against Le- icester- shire five years ago. Gloucester made 252 for three in 34.4 overs but two rain squalls demanded the Duckworth-Lewis calculation and a revised York- shire target of 250 in 30 overs. Yorkshire, needing to score over eight an over, were in the frame after Jon Lewis`s three early wickets, finishing 44 runs adrift, though Peter Hartley smote three sixes in a whirlwind 46 and Richard Blakey hit 56. Gloucester won the toss and batted, losing Tony Wright, before Young took charge with 50 in 52 balls, then reached his first centu- ry for the county in just 28 more. Gloucester were 131 for one at the halfway stage as Young launched into overdrive, finishing with nine sixes and nine fours. Bobby Cunliffe (56) was becalmed in comparison but soon caught the mood, trading more in deft deflection despite one massive pull off Gavin Hamilton. The sight of Monte Lynch limping out was not one to gladden Yorkshire. Lynch is more dangerous when damaged and a hamstring stain re- stricted his mobility. When Hartley dropped him off a top-edged sweep, the portents were distinctly unpromising. Hartley, though, was soon reprieved, clutching an identical of- fering.
