Date-stamped : 25 Jun97 - 06:18 Openers set record By David Green Gloucestershire (351-2) bt Scotland (250-9) by 101 runs AN OPENING stand of 311, a record for any wicket in Gillette/NatWest matches, between Tony Wright and Nick Trainor put Gloucester- shire beyond the reach of Scotland at Bristol. After Gloucestershire had won the toss, Wright and Trainor initially made heavy weather against tidy bowling, but as the ball got softer, they took control. Trainor was quickest to three figures, in 131 balls, against 143, but later Wright, the man of the match, played quite bril- liantly, his last 77 runs coming off only 45 balls. Gloucestershire`s attack, lacking Mike Smith, with a slight groin strain, was played comfortably enough by Bruce Patterson, 77, and Mike Smith, 73, the latter looking particularly fluent in a second- wicket stand of 135 in 31 overs. Smith had driven two big sixes off Martyn Ball, plus seven fours, when he was brilliantly stumped by Jack Russell off Tim Hancock, whose medium pace brought him six for 58, a personal best for the competition.
