Can Lanka break Asgiriya hoodoo this time?

The Asgiriya Cricket Stadium, Kandy, venue of the first cricket Test between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe does not hold many happy memories for the home team.

Sri Lanka has not only failed to record a single victory in the six Tests played there, but have also a habit of being bowled out for small totals.

Their worst batting performance was in August 1994 - the last time a Test was played there - when they succumbed to Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis to be shot out for their lowest total in Test cricket - 71.

Prior to that dismal performance, Sri Lanka has been dismissed for totals of 97 by New Zealand in 1983-84, and 109 and 101 by Pakistan in 1986.

Of the six Test venues in Sri Lanka, Asgiriya Stadium and Tyronne Fernando Stadium, Moratuwa are two grounds where Sri Lanka have yet to record a Test victory.

Of special interest is that the present manager of the Sri Lanka team and chairman of selectors Duleep Mendis and national selector Roy Dias figured in the only double century partnership on this ground - a match-saving 216 for the fourth wicket against India in 1985.

Another national selector, Saliya Ahangama has the best figures by a Sri Lankan bowler on this ground.

Sri Lanka's Australian-born coach Bruce Yardley took 5 for 88 (match bag of 7 for 166) to help rout Sri Lanka by an innings in the inaugural Test match played at Asgiriya in 1983.
