Date-stamped : 20 Feb1998 - 18:19 Feb 19-22, 1998 Jamaica v Trinidad and Tobago Reports from the Gleaner Day 1: Ja fightback Versel Thompson, Freelance Writer CRICKET: Trinidad and Tobago's Suruj Ragoonath and Darren Ganga each scored half centuries on the opening day of their four day President's Cup game against Jamaica at Chedwin Park yesterday. Jamaica after winning the toss and sending the opposition to take first strike, fought back confidently to gain the valuable wickets of captain Brian Lara, Ragoonath and Ganga to left the visitors on 237 for six at stumps. The home side could have been in a more comfortable position, had wicketkeeper Andre Coley not dropped Ragoonath off the bowling of pacer Franklyn Rose off the fourth ligitimate delivery of the day, with the batsman yet to score and later in the 88th over when he dropped David Williams off James Adams. The Trinidadians had a tentative start with the opening pair of Ragoonath and Anil Balliram posting 52 runs for the first wicket, before Balliram was bowled by right-arm leg-spinner Bryan Murphy just before lunch for 23. Trinidad went to lunch on 58 for one with Ragoonath unbeaten on 27 and Ganga, who came in at number three, on two. The pair posted 91 runs for the second-wicket before Ragoonath was caught by Laurie Williams off Adams at the stroke of tea for 61. He spent nearly four hours at the crease, facing 200 balls while hiting one six and seven fours. Ganga and Test discard Phil Simmons put on 24 runs after the interval while looking set to score a big total. However, on 68 Ganga fell on his stumps while attempting a shot off Adams' left-arm turners with Trinidad on 167. In two hours and 50 minutes Ganga hit nine fours from 148 balls. Richard Smith joined Simmons but was run out by Carl Wright at mid-off without adding to the score. Lara batting at number six steered his team past the 200 mark adding 54 with Simmons before he was caught by Jamaica's captain Courtney Walsh off medium pacer Laurie Williams for 37 made from 33 balls in 40 minutes. David Williams after a shaky start was brilliantly caught at first slip by Walsh with a right hand catch to left the game interestingly poised. Adams with two wickets for 47 runs from 20 overs with six maidens, Murphy two for 72 from 30 overs with nine maidens and Williams one for 51 from 17 overs were the successful bowlers for Jamaica. The game continues this morning at 10:00 with Simmons and Ian Bishop the not out batsmen to resume on 26 and four respectively.
