Symcox is fined after flare-up

PAT SYMCOX, the South African off-spinner, marred his best Test performance by losing his temper with home umpire Javed Akhtar here yesterday as the game with Pakistan finished in a draw.

One of the heaviest fines yet under the game's code of conduct £800, half of Symcox's match fee - was imposed by match referee Ranjan Madugalle for two offences: showing dissent and gesturing to a player in an unbecoming manner.

Symcox, who took four wickets in the match - the most in any of his 11 Tests - was upset by a rejected appeal for a pad-bat catch off Pakistan batsman Wasim Mohammad when Brian McMillan at silly point dived to take the ball one-handed.

The spinner appeared to say something to the batsman and McMillan, also unhappy, threw the ball away aggressively. When Symcox got back to his mark there was a sharp exchange with umpire Akhtar.

Mohammad seemed edgy after the incident and was dismissed in Symcox's next over. The bowler celebrated by giving him a send-off - twice wheeling his arm at the batsman in the direction of the pavilion.

Symcox later took an outstanding, one-handed, diving catch at square leg to dismiss Inzamam-ul-Haq soon after he had reached a half-century.
