Pakistan reported for bowling on Test strip

By Peter Deeley in Faisalabad

SENIOR Pakistani players were filmed yesterday practising on the pitch being prepared for the third Test here - an action which the South African manager, S K Reddy, described as ``a blatant breach of the spirit of the game''.

A South African cameraman captured Wasim Akram bowling slow turners to the wicketkeeper Moin Khan on the wicket which had already been marked out for the final game in the series starting today. Other Pakistan players can clearly be seen on the video observing how much the ball moves.

The cameraman said he also watched Mushtaq Ahmed bowling. ``I was shooting from up in the stand out of vision of the players,'' he added.

The International Cricket Council code of conduct, playing conditions and regulations states that captains, umpires, referee and groundsman should combine to ensure that ``prior to the start of any day's play, no one bounces a ball on the pitch or strikes it with a bat to assess the condition . . . ``

Since the pitch here has not yet been handed over by the ground authority to the Test umpires, technically the actions of the home players are not in breach of this law.

But the South Africans feel that their action is certainly contrary to the ethics of the game and could be taken as an attempt to gain unfair knowledge of the pitch's properties. Reddy is to lodge a protest with his opposite number, Haroon Rashid, in the Pakistan camp. The ICC, who have been informed of the incident, are to take up the matter with the Pakistan board.

The final Test has become the one-off match in the series with Pakistan preparing the closest you will ever get to a green top in this country.

After the high-scoring draw in the first match at Rawalpindi and the rain-affected farce at Sheikhupura, this series is desperately in need of positive action.
