Wasim Akram to replace Saeed Anwar

KARACHI, Oct 27: In wake of an upsetting and demoralising 53-run defeat in the third and final Test against South Africa, Pakistan administrators have apparently decided to hand over the charge of the team back to Wasim Akram.

Interestingly, neither Saeed Anwar nor Wasim Akram have been approached by the authorities till the time of filing this report but sources stated that the decision has been taken. ``Saeed Anwar is already struggling with the bat and he is too good a batsman to be wasted like this,'' sources on condition of anonymity said.

The 14-member team for the quadrangular cup is expected to be announced on Tuesday at Lahore. The team had been finalised two weeks ago but was delayed because the authorities had kept a watchful eye on the performance of Saeed Anwar.

However, the authorities cited other reasons for delaying the announcement. They argued that Inzamamul Haq's availability was doubtful as he might have to go to Toronto. Instead, the preliminary hearing of Inzamam is on 31st and his appearance in that is not necessary. Moreover, the matter is expected to be settled out of court.

The likely team is: Wasim Akram (captain), Saeed Anwar, Aamir Sohail, Shahid Afridi, Ali Naqvi, Ijaz Ahmad, Inzamamul Haq, Mohammad Wasim, Moin Khan, Waqar Younis, Azhar Mahmood, Aqib Javed, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mohammad Husain.
