LAHORE, July 7: On Monday, the dashing opening batsman Aamir
Sohail joined the short-duration Pakistan Cricket Camp. That has
been established for preparation of the fourth Asia Cup Cricket
Tournament being played in Colombo from July 14 to 26. Aamir
Sohail took part in training along with all the teammates picked
for the competition. The camp will be wound up on Tuesday. The
Pakistan team will leave for Karachi on Wednesday morning and
from there fly to Colombo on Sunday. The national selection
committee included Aamir Sohail in the Pakistan team after the
disciplinary committee recommended to the PCB Council that the
player had paid the fine of Rs 20,000 imposed on him and also
tendered ``unconditional apology''. He also did not give any
evidence to substantiate his charges of betting and match-fixing
leveled against some of the teammates. The PCB Council decided
to close his case and also approved the names of members of the
team picked by the national selectors. Those included Aamir
Sohail.
The player's return to the Pakistan cricket team should
strengthen it in all departments of the game. Aamir Sohail is a
solid left-hand batsman and along with the vice-captain Saeed
Anwar makes the finest opening pair in the game today. He is a
safe fielder and a very useful left-arm spinner.
The four-nation Asia Cup Cricket Tournament is being played
among the teams of the host country, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India
and Bangladesh. It will begin with a match between Pakistan and
Sri Lanka at the Premadasa Stadium and conclude with the final
at the same venue on July 26.
The programme of the tournament is: July 14: Pakistan vs. Sri
Lanka at Premadasa Stadium. July 16: Pakistan vs. Bangladesh at
Premadasa Stadium. July 18: Sri Lanka vs. India at Premadasa
Stadium. July 20: Pakistan vs. India at Sinhalese Sports Club.
July 22: Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh at Sinhalese Sports Club. July
24: India vs. Bangladesh at Sinhalese Sports Club. July 26:
