DARREN STEVENS, the 20-year-old Leicestershire batsman, is ready to make his first-class debut against the Pakistan tourists in the three-day Tetley Challenge match starting at Grace Road today.

Stevens will come in if Gregor Macmillan fails to recover from a hand injury suffered in the drawn championship game with Glamorgan.

With James Whitaker, who has a torn calf, and Phil Simmons (bruised hand) absent, Vince Wells will captain the county for the first time.

Mike Gatting is set to return to lead Middesex in their championship match against Worcestershire starting at Lord's tomorrow, less than a fortnight after undergoing knee surgery.

Robin Martin-Jenkins, the 20-year-old Sussex all- rounder, is suffering from glandular fever and will miss the rest of the season.

The Sussex fast bowler, Ed Giddins, will be accom- panied by county secretary Nigel Bett and Cricketers' Asso- ciation solicitor Laurie Doffmann, when he appears before the Test and County Cricket Board's disciplinary committee on a drugs-related case at Lord's on Monday.
