Walsh defends under-achieving Lara

29 January 1997

West Indies captain Courtney Walsh, smarting from the loss of the Frank Worrell Trophy with Australia going 3-1 up in the five-Test series now on in Australia, came to the defence of master batsman Brian Lara and said it was time the other players in the squad helped ease the pressure on the left-handed batting star.

Walsh said that the main reason for the West Indies' going under 3-1 to Australia in the ongoing Test series was its inability to find a dominant batsman.

Brian Lara, holder of the world record for the highest Test and first class scores, has had a dismal run of 6, 44, 2, 1, 2, 2, 9 and 78 in Australia thus far, with that aggressive 78 in the second innings of the fourth Test being the only occasion when he has looked like his usual self.

``We in the West Indies believe it's going to be impossible for Brian to dominate every single Test series,'' Walsh said. ``It's probably a good thing for him for it to happen now.

``All great players go through these patches. I'm not going to pick on Brian because he hasn't got runs - great players do fail from time to time.''

Walsh said that what was worrying him more than Lara's poor run with the bat was the failure of other top-order players to come up with big innings. The likes of Jimmy Adams, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Sherwin Campbell have all performed less than at par during the ongoing series.
