Mahesh Perera helps Peterites to a draw

A DEFIANT 62 runs by Mahesh Perera helped St. Peter's to force a draw against St. Sebastian's in their inter-school cricket encounter at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

In reply to the Peterites 170 St. Sebastian's were 113 for 2 overnight and declared their innings at lunch 249 for 5. Buddika Mendis who was unbeaten on 51 overnight top scored with 69 with 8 boundaries and a six. An unfinished sixth wicket stand of 91 runs between Nalin Wijesinghe (67 n.o) and Laknath Fernando (36 n.o.) helped the Sebastianites to close their innings with a lead of 79 runs. Wijesinghe had 10 fours in his innings and Laknath Fernando struck four boundaries and a six.

The Peterites were 47 for 3 when Mahesh Perera arrived at the crease. Perera who represented Sri Lanka at the Under 15 Mini World Cup held in England recently played a matured innings to pull his side out of trouble. He batted for over three hours and hit 4 boundaries and two sixes.

In the remaining four mandatory overs St. Sebastian's had to get 100 runs to win and they were 10 for 2 at stumps.

Antonians meet DSSC in Horlicks Trophy semi-final

HORLICKS TROPHY under-13 cricket champions St. Anthony's, Katugastota stormed into the semi-finals of this year's tournament, winning all their first round matches.

The Antonians will meet D. S. Senanayake College (DSSC) in the semi- finals on Tuesday and Wednesday (Jan. 14 and 15) at Katugastota.

In the first round, the young Antonians beat Trinity by 122 runs, beat Kingswood by 198 runs, beat Dharmaraja by 39 runs, beat St. Anne's College, Kurunegala by 63 runs and beat Maliyadeva Kurunegala by 47 runs.

In the second round, the Antonians won two of the matches easily, beating Thurstan College and Kalutara Vidyalaya.

St. Anthony's who batted first in the game against Thurstan, scored 208 for 8 wickets in their 50 overs, with T. Silva making 68. Thurstan were dismissed for 150. H. Tillekeratne bowled best to take 4 for 43.

Against Kalutara Vidyalaya, the Antonians were in a spot of bother, making 149 for 9 wickets in their 50 overs, but they hit back and shot out Kalutara Vidyalaya for 58, with D. Ranawaka captur- ing 7 for 6 runs.

There is a centurion in the side - A. N. Ariyaratne who made the three-figure mark in the first-round game against Kingswood.

BRC MADE a bold reply and were 207 for 5 at close on the second day in reply to NCC's 412 for 8 declared in their Saravanamuttu Trophy cricket match at Maitland Place yesterday.

Dammika Rajapakse top-scored for BRC with 67 including 10 boundaries and put on 80-runs for the fourth wicket with Chethaka Perera (46 with five fours and a six). Duncan Arnolda too batted well to be unbeaten with 40 at close with seven boundaries and with Rajapakse made 71 for the fifth wicket.

Earlier NCC who were 325 for 5 overnight went onto make 412 for 8 when the declaration came. Hashan Tillekeratne who was unbeaten on 123 added only twenty runs. He hit 16 boundaries while Dunusinghe too helped to swell the total with a good half century with five boundaries and a six in only 45 balls.

Nalanda - Thurstan ends in exciting draw

Nalanda set to make 185 in 28 overs were 114 for 6 at close in their drawn inter school cricket match against Thurstan at Campbell Place yesterday.

Nalanda overnight 99 for 1 in reply to Thurstan 211 were dismissed for 183 with S. Dayaratne top-scoring with 63 and supported by S. Rodrigo with 40, Rodrigo and Dayaratne were associated with a 76 runs stand for the second wicket, Chamara Liyanage 5 for 49 and Hemantha Boteju 4 for 77 shared the bowling honours for Thurstan.

Thurstan batting a second time declared at 156 for 5, Chamara Liyanage completed a well compiled 57.

In Nalanda's second innings D. Dayaratne stroked a fine unbeaten 45.

Dodanwela and Soysa bowl SSC to innings win

SSC'S TWO speed twins' - Nuwan Soysa and Samantha Dodanwala, ripped through Kalutara TC in both innings to help their side to an innings and 163-run victory yesterday at Maitland Place with a day to spare in their Sara Trophy cricket match.

Soysa had a match bag of 9 for 49, while Dodanwala claimed a haul of 7 for 40.

SSC who were 161 for 4 overnight in reply to Kalutara TC's meagre 109, went on to make 350 with Rochana Jayawardene top scoring with 89 inclusive of 10 boundaries and a six in 171 minutes. Hemantha Wickremaratne too completed a half century (52), while Pramodya Wickremasinghe too hit an impressive 32.

Kalutara TC in their second turn were skittlled out for 74 with Soysa and Dodanwala taking four scalps each, while Mahela Jayawardene claimed two wickets in successive deliveeries.

Isipatana hold DSSC to a draw

ISIPATANA HELPED by some intelligent batting in their second innings after being sent in for the follow-on, managed to draw their schools cricket match against D. S. Senanayake College (DSSC) at Wijerama Mawatha yesterday. Isipatana made only 111 in their first innings in reply to DS's 258 for 6 declared, and sent in for innings, fared much better and were 203 for 7 at close.

Kanchana Madugalle stroked a fine 85 with nine hits to the ropes and three sixes to help Isipatana to avoid defeat. He was helped by Muditha Fernando (42) when they put on 71-runs for the third wicket. Rangana Fernando too batted well to makke an unbeaten 38.

D. S. Senanayake College 258 for 6 declared (R. Sureshchandra 61, S. Lafir 12, D. Perera 59, N. Pradeep 51, D. Amaraweera 12 not out, Y. Fonseka not out 28, A. Wanigasekera 4 for 78).

Upul Chandana spearheads Tamil Union's innings over Singha

SRI LANKA Test cricketer Upul Chandana turned out to be the match winner for Tamil Union as they crushed Singha SC by an innings and 194 runs on the second day of their Saravanamuttu Trophy cricket match at the Saravanamuttu Stadium yesterday. Tamils made 448 for 9 declared in their first innings and Singha were bundled out for 133 and 121.

Upul Chandana who made a fine 104 in the Tamil Union innings, helped to skittle out Singha for 121 in their second innings with 6 for 25. Chandana had 3 for 30 in Singha's first innings to have a match bag of 9 for 55.

Another Sri Lanka ''cap'' Muttiah Muralitharan had a match bag of 6 for 56 for Tamil Union.
