NCC - strong reply

AN UNBROKEN second wicket stand of 141 runs between opener Ruwin Peiris 58 not out and 'one drop' batsman Sanjeewa Ranatunga 77 not out enabled NCC to make a bold reply of 146 for 1 against Galle CC in their Sara Trophy Segment 'A' cricket tournament match at Maitland Place yesterday.

Galle CC, continuing 252 for 6 wickets, made a formidable score of 326. Duminda Wickremasinghe 69 not out overnight, went onto complete a fine unbeaten century (103) with 8 fours. Hasitha Ra- japakse made 30. Dinesh Samarasinghe returned the best bowling figures of 4 for 47 while Russel Arnold had 2 for 19.

NCC began losing the opener Russel Arnold for a duck. But Ruwin Peiris and Sanjeewa Ranatunga batted elegantly. Ruwin's half century included 4 fours and 1 six while Sanjeewa hit 7 fours and 1 six in his knock of 77 not out.

Galle CC 252 for 6 overnight 326 all out (D. Wickremasinghe 103 not out, H. Rajapakse 30, S. de Silva 2 for 77, D. Samarasinghe 4 for 47, R. Arnold 2 for 19).

Matara SC takes first innings

MATARA SPORTS Club took first innings points in their Sara Trophy Segment 'B' cricket match against Kalutara PCC at the Uyanwatte Esplanade yesterday.

Matara SC made 241 and 156 for 3 wkts, while Kalutara PCC were out for 124.

The match will be continued today at 9.30 a.m.

Sebastianites make 412

A FINE century by Asela Fernando (110) and an equally good knock by S. K. Silva (70) helped Sebastianites to make 412 for 9 wickets at close of play on day two of their Saravanamuttu Trophy Segment 'A' match against Kalutara Town Club at the Tyronne Fernando Stadium yesterday.

Earlier, Kalutara Town Club made 229 in their first innings.

SSC poised for outright win

SSC are poised to win outright in their Saravanamuttu Trophy (Segment 'A') cricket match with BRC at Havelock Park today. BRC were bundled out for 204 in their first innings in reply to SSC's 394 and sent in for the follow-on, BRC were 64 for 3 at close.

Nuwan Soysa was once again among the wickets for SSC with 4 for 61, while another Sri Lanka Test cricketer, Jayantha Silva claimed 3 for 49.

SSC: 394 in 89.5 overs.

BRC: 204 in 76.1 overs (Indika Galagoda 41, Dhammika Rajapakse 20, Sidath Tennakoon 44, Suranji Madanayake 19, Wendell Labrooy 32, Nuwan Soysa 4 for 61, Jayantha Silva 3 for 49) and 64 for 3 at close in 21 overs (Indika Galagoda 21. Dhammika Rajapakse not out 22).

Colts set for innings win

COLTS look set to get an early innings victory today over Kurunegala YCC in their Sarvanamuttu Trophy (Segment 'A') cricket match at Havelock Park. Colts declared at their overnight total of 413 for 6 and bundled out KYCC for 197 in their first innings. KYCC following on were 71 for 4 at close yesterday - yet 145 runs behind with six wickets remaining.

The Colts bowler who did the damage was former Sri Lanka paceman Dulip Liyanage who had 5 for 42 in the first innings and out of the four KYCC wickets that fell in their second turn. Liyanage had taken 2 for 14.

Colts: 413 for 6 declared in 95 overs.

Kurunegala YCC: 197 in 69.1 overs (Chaminda Handunettige 82, Lanka de Silva 21, Hiran Liyanage not out 50, Chaminda Vaas 2 for 50, Dulip Liyanage 5 for 42, Dinuka Hettiarachchi 2 for 40) and 71 for 4 at close in 24 overs (Damitha Hunukumbura 11, Roshan Jaymon not out 20, Lanka de Silva not out 16, Dulip Liyanage 2 for 14).
