Ali Bacher's nephew bats himself into record books

19 November 1996

Adam Bacher, nephew of former Springbok captain and current South African cricket boss Ali Bacher, became the first South African to score a century and a double century in the same first class match.

The 23-year-old, who opens the batting for Transvaal, scored 112 not out in the second innings to add to his first innings 210, helping his side record a 93-run win against Griqualand West in the Supersport Series.

If you want to get technical about it, Allan Lamb had way back in 1992 hit 209 and 107 for Northamptonshire against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. However, this fact is being given the miss by the United Cricket Board of South Africa.

``We do not consider Allan Lamb a South African,'' said Ali Bacher, managing director of the UCB. ''As far as the record books are concerned, this is the first time the feat is being performed by a South African.''

Lamb's disqualification from the record books apparently stems from the fact that though he was South African, he lived and played all his cricket in, and for, England.
