One Day Series To Resume

31 December 1996

Australia, beaten by the West Indies in the last match, are determined to maintain their upper hand when the World Series Cup triangular tournament resumes on Wednesday. They will play Pakistan under lights in Sydney.

Australia called up Queensland fast bowler Andrew Bichel at the expense of Jason Gillespie, to strengthen their side which heads the standings of the three-nation tournament with four points two wins and a loss in three matches. Bichel (26 years) who is the leading wicket taker in Australian first class cricket, will join Queensland team mate Stuart Law.

Pakistan is placed second in the standings with a win against Australia and a loss at the hands of the West Indies, who are placed last with a solitary win in three games.

The five-Test series between the touring West Indies and Australia will come to a temporary halt to complete the World Series Cup one day tournament which resumes on Wednesday.

With the West Indies winning the third Test in Melbourne by six wickets, the Test series turned out to be an interesting affair though Australia takes a close 2-1 lead having won the first two Tests.
