The Christchurch Press Lewis Confident NZ Can Take Lead In Series
Captain Maia Lewis is confident the New Zealand women's cricket - 19 February 1997

Australia at Lancaster Park today, with the five match series locked at one-all.

Following Monday's morale-sapping 89-run loss, the team discussed their shortcomings at Eden Park before heading to the Cricket Academy's high performance centre at Lincoln University. The women were unable to have a run at Lancaster Park before the third Rosebowl clash because of the third New Zealand/England test being played there.

Lewis said the team had a positive attitude going into the match.

``We are really going to take it to them,'' she said. ``With the series tied up at one-all, we'll try a few different tactics.''

In the series to date Australia's captain Belinda Clark has been a key figure for the visiting side, scoring 43 in the first game last Thursday and then a brilliant 142 on Sunday when Australia achieved its Rosebowl record score against New Zealand. Australia scored 247 for five at Eden Park, while New Zealand achieved 227 for nine in the first match last week.

Zoe Goss has given her valuable support batting at three, while Melanie Jones and Karen Rolton have been prepared to put bat on ball.

The importance of the New Zealand attack bowling the correct line to the Australian batswomen today would be paramount, New Zealand coach Ann McKenna said.

Australia has two very pacy opening bowlers in Catherine Fitzpatrick and Charlene Mason. Fitzpatrick's bowling has been timed at 120kmh.

Debbie Hockley has top scored for New Zealand in both games with 67 and 78 not out to be averaging 145. Her bowling has also been a valuable asset with her economical slow-medium deliveries dismissing Goss in each game.

Emily Drumm played a typically dashing innings in Napier, but was handicapped by injury in Auckland. The best is still to come from some of the Kiwi batswomen, with a few due for a big total.

The game today is the third in a five-match series.
