Sidhu back in harness as India seek stability

25 October 1996

INDIA'S selectors yesterday called up the controversial Navjot Sidhu to bolster the team's fragile batting line-up for the remainder of the home triangular series.

Sidhu, 33, India's most experienced batsman, was recalled after serving a 50-day ban for walking out of the England tour following a disagreement with then-captain Mohammad Azharuddin.

The ban ended a day after India won the one-off Test against Australia in New Delhi on Oct 13, but a finger injury and poor form prevented Sidhu from playing the first three matches of the one-day series.

Two defeats against South Africa at the halfway stage of the preliminary league, however, prompted the selectors to call up Sidhu, who averages more than 40 in both Test and one-day cricket.
