Date-stamped : 06 Jan97 - 10:34 Report Electronic Telegraph Lara century sees West Indies home By a Special Correspondent in Brisbane BRIAN LARA hit his first century on tour and Carl Hooper his first one-day hundred against Australia as the West Indies defied the odds to overhaul Australia's huge score of 281. Lara, struggling for much of the Australian tour, clubbed 102 off 114 balls while Hooper steered the tourists to the top of the triangular series standings with an unbeaten 110 off 108 balls. Mark Waugh had cracked a majestic 102 and Stuart Law 93, yet the West Indies reached their summit with seven balls to spare. It was the second highest successful chase in one-day games in Australia, after New Zealand's 297 for six to beat England at Adelaide in 1982-83. It was the recharged West Indians' third straight win in the series after two losses to Australia and reflects the dramatic form turnaround for the tourists, who were wallowing last month with seven straight tour defeats and down 2-0 in the Frank Worrell Trophy Test series. The West Indies were set a run-rate of 5.64 per over to overhaul the Australians' highest one-day score of the series on a placid Gabba pitch, but with man-of-the-match Hooper in belligerent form, clubbing Shane Warne for two fours, his team were left with three runs to score off 10 balls. Jimmy Adams, also back in form after a sluggish start to the tour, was not out 34. It was Lara's 10th limited-over century and his first since his 104 against New Zealand in Kingston last April. Earlier, Waugh, opening the innings, hit five fours and two sixes in his ninth limited-overs hundred while Law fell seven runs short of a second one-day century after a freakish catch by Lara. Law was also involved in the run-outs of Mark Waugh and twin brother Steve. Australia hit five sixes in the innings, more than in the first three Tests and first four one-dayers combined. The West Indies bowled poorly, continually pitching far too short on a superb batting track and sending down 17 no-balls.
